I’ll admit, I have a type, and it’s a bar with a slight stickiness to the floor and a bartender who knows my order before I do. But Novi’s drinking spots are more than just a place to hide from my responsibilities; they range from a proper trivia night with a stellar pretzel to a lounge where the sushi is genuinely considered.

You can find fish and chips worth a midweek pilgrimage or a patio where the best meditation is watching clouds drift by. I’ve spilled a full pint on myself at one of these places (my fault), and I’ve lost a game of pool to a man named Tiny (also my fault).

So trust me when I say the perfect spot for your particular brand of chaos is on this list.

Highlights
Proper trivia night atmosphere
Stellar pretzel appetizer
Phenomenal server hospitality
Excellent food and beer
Handles big groups gracefully

I walked into Beerhead Bar & Eatery on a Tuesday and immediately felt like I'd found my people. The trivia night atmosphere is proper, not that shouty kind where you feel dumb for not knowing the capital of Uzbekistan. I ordered the stellar pretzel appetizer, and let me tell you, it's worth the carb coma. Our server was phenomenal, patient with my endless questions about the beer list. The food and beer both shine, which is rare in a place this big. They handled our clumsy group of eight without a single eye roll. I spilled a full pint on myself. That was my fault, not theirs. Go for the pretzel. Stay for the kindness.

Intimate chic lounge vibes
Great sushi and cocktails
Perfect for date night

Jia Lounge is the kind of place I usually mess up by wearing a hoodie with a stain on it. But I went anyway, and I'm glad I did. The intimate chic lounge vibes are real, all low lights and soft corners where you can actually hear your date. I had great sushi and cocktails, and honestly, the sushi surprised me. I was expecting bar snacks, not something that felt this considered. Perfect for date night, especially if you're like me and need a dark room to hide your awkwardness. I tried to pay with a card that got declined. My date covered it. We're still together, somehow. That says something about the place.

Highlights
Quick, excellent bar food
Perfectly cooked potato skins
Big, delicious burgers
Friendly, clean service
Outdoor patio coming soon

Gatsby's is my kind of joint because the food comes fast and it comes right. I had the potato skins, which were perfectly cooked, crispy edges and gooey cheese, no sogginess anywhere. The burger was big and delicious, the kind you need two hands for and zero shame about. Service was friendly and clean, which I appreciate because I'm picky about sticky floors. I hear an outdoor patio is coming soon, which makes me nervous because I'll probably spend all summer there and get nothing done. I already have a tab running in my head. Quick, excellent bar food is a gift. I don't deserve it, but I'll take it.

Friendly staff and service
Great outdoor seating area
Real good bar food
Small town bar experience

Copper Mug Bar & Grill feels like stepping into a small town even though it's in Novi. The staff and service are friendly, the kind of folks who remember your drink order after one visit. I sat outside on the great outdoor seating area and watched the clouds, which is my version of meditation. The bar food is real good, nothing fancy, just solid. I had a Reuben, I think, or was it a patty melt? It doesn't matter. It was right. The whole place gives you that small town bar experience, like everyone knows each other but they're happy to let you pretend you belong. I pretended. I think they knew.

Highlights
Amazing Friday fish and chips
Burgers beat sports bar chains
Daily specials offer good value
Food far above typical bar grub

I have strong opinions about fish and chips, and Wagon Wheel Lounge just won my heart. Their Friday fish and chips are amazing, flaky and golden, with fries that don't wimp out. The burgers beat any sports bar chain I've been to, and I've been to a lot, mostly by accident. Daily specials offer good value, which matters because I'm cheap and proud. The food here is far above typical bar grub, like someone actually cares about the fryer oil. I went on a Thursday by mistake and still left happy. I think I'll go on Friday and then again on Saturday. I have a problem. This is the solution.

Highlights
Real deal dive bar
Great music, lively pool
Cold High Life pours
Trustworthy, then exploitive staff
Lonely hearts, toxic vibes

Wixom Bar is a real deal dive bar, no pretending otherwise. The music is great and the pool table stays busy, which I love until I have to play. Cold High Life pours are the currency here, and I spent a lot of it. The staff is trustworthy at first, then exploitive, in the best way, they'll take your money and fry your brain. Lonely hearts and toxic vibes fill the corners, and I fit right in. I lost a game of pool to a man named Tiny. He didn't even smile. I respected that. Bring cash. Bring your guard. Leave your dignity at the door. I did.

Welcoming, energetic, never overcrowded
Polite staff, quick service
Hot, fresh, generous portions
Bartenders treat you like family
Pool, darts, and patio

Shots Bar & Grille is the rare place that's welcoming and energetic without ever feeling overcrowded. I walked in and the staff was polite, quick, and the service was fast even when the bar got busy. I ordered food and got hot, fresh, generous portions that made me wonder if they mixed up my order with a football player's. The bartenders treat you like family, which is nice until they call you out for ordering a salad at a dive bar. I did though, and it was good. They have pool, darts, and a patio, so I never have to decide what to do. I just rotate. I'm a simple man.

Highlights
Best fish and chips
Friendly, welcoming staff
Lovely lake view
True local dive vibe

Lakeview Bar & Grill has the best fish and chips in Novi, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the kind of folks who wave when you walk in like you're a regular even if it's your first time. The view of the lake is lovely, and I spent a good hour just staring at it while my beer got warm. True local dive vibe, all worn-in wood and honest conversation. I overheard two guys arguing about a dog. It was wholesome. The fish was crispy, the chips were chunky, and I left with a full belly and a lighter heart. I'll be back. I'll probably forget my wallet.

Saturday: 10 AM–2 AM
Highlights
Friendly, quick bartender service
Wonderful, juicy burgers
Great, attentive waitstaff
Worth a weekly repeat visit

The Roadhouse is the kind of place you go once and then find yourself craving on a random Tuesday. The bartender was friendly and quick, pouring my drink before I even finished ordering. The burgers are wonderful and juicy, with a char that tastes like actual effort. The waitstaff is great and attentive, checking in just the right amount, not too much, not too little. I think this place is worth a weekly repeat visit, and I'm not a man of routine. I once ate cereal for dinner three nights straight. But The Roadhouse broke my streak. I had a burger, then a second one. Don't judge me. Judge the fries, which are also good.

Highlights
Cheap eats, big flavors
Rowdy sports bar energy
Service goes above and beyond
Cauliflower worth the wait
Reubens packed with punch

Joe Kool's Novi Bar & Grill is a rowdy sports bar with a menu that punches way above its price tag. Cheap eats, big flavors, and the energy is loud in the best way, like everyone's winning, even the losers. The service goes above and beyond, I asked for extra napkins and got a whole stack, plus a smile. I ordered the cauliflower and waited, and waited, but it was worth the wait, crispy and spicy and weirdly perfect. The Reubens are packed with punch, salty, meaty, everything. I went alone and left with a new friend who talked about fishing for an hour. I don't fish. I listened. That's the magic here.

Longtime local favorite
Friendly, smiling staff
Fairly priced drinks
Tasty bar classics
Tucked away atmosphere

Sheehan's On the Green is a longtime local favorite, and I get why. The staff is friendly and smiling, the kind of welcome you don't have to earn. Drinks are fairly priced, which means I can have more than one without doing math in my head. The bar classics are tasty, I had a chicken sandwich that was simple and honest. The place is tucked away, so it feels like a secret, even though everyone clearly knows. I sat at the bar and just watched people laugh. It was nice to not be the only awkward one. I'll be back. I'll probably sit in the same spot. I'm a creature of habit.

Highlights
Warm welcome for newcomers
Excellent food and drinks
Friendly, attentive staff
Regulars treated like family
Great veggie wrap option

Nassau Grill & Bar gave me a warm welcome even though I walked in looking like I'd just lost a fight with a lawnmower. For newcomers, this place is a gift. The food and drinks are excellent, I had a veggie wrap that actually had flavor, which is rare in a dive bar. The staff is friendly and attentive, checking in without hovering. The regulars treat the place like family, and they were nice to me, an intruder. I sat near the bar and watched the rhythm. I felt at home by my second drink. I might start coming here regularly. That's a threat, not a promise.
